I am so glad that you asked! With so many new people moving to Texas, I feel like it’s a great time to explain what this whole Texas Homecoming Tradition thing is all about.
The tradition is said to have been started by college students back in the early 1900’s. It became popular in Texas in the 1930’s when Baylor University held their first ever Homecoming Celebration. Real mums (chrysanthemums) were given to the ladies by their homecoming date’s. They would be attached to a ladies blouse and be worn during the game and festivities.
Later, they were then decorated with streamers of ribbons with bells and bows. As the years went, this tradition was adopted by high schools, middle schools, and even elementary schools all across The Lone Star State. As the tradition grew, so has the Homecoming Mum!
They are rarely the simple flower of the past pinned on a young lady’s shirt. Some of them need a support system to be worn. Mums can range in size from tiny to mega, and can cost as little or as much as you are willing to pay.
One thing is certain though, Texans love their Homecoming Tradition and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. So welcome to The Lone Star State!
